Who we are
Away Message is a product of Away Message, Inc., a Robin's Nest company, based in Atlanta, Georgia. We build tools for grief care and emotional legacy. You can reach us at support@awaymessage.app.
What we collect
We collect the following information when you use Away Message:
- Account information: your name and email address when you sign up
- Profile information: your profile photo if you choose to upload one
- Messages: voice recordings, videos, photos, and written letters you record or upload
- Keepsakes: files you upload to preserve personal memories
- Recipient information: names, email addresses, and phone numbers of people you add to your circle
- Sender information: names, email addresses, and phone numbers of people you designate as Senders
- Usage data: how you interact with the app, device type, and general location (country/region)
- Payment information: processed securely by our payment provider. We never store your card details.
How we use your information
We use your information to:
- Store and deliver your messages to your recipients when the time comes
- Notify your Senders when confirmation is needed
- Send you account-related notifications you have opted into
- Improve the Away Message product
- Respond to your support requests
We will never sell your personal information. We will never share your messages with anyone other than the recipients you designate.
How your messages are stored
Your messages are stored in encrypted cloud storage provided by Supabase, hosted on AWS infrastructure in the United States. Access to your message files is restricted to you and, upon delivery confirmation, your designated recipients. We use signed URLs that expire after one hour for all file access. No permanent public links are ever generated.
Your Senders and recipients
Your Senders and recipients can never access, listen to, or view the content of your messages before or after delivery confirmation, unless they are a designated recipient. Your recipients are only contacted when delivery has been confirmed by your Senders. Neither Senders nor recipients can see each other's contact information.
Third-party services
Away Message uses industry-standard cloud infrastructure providers for application hosting, file storage, email delivery, and SMS notifications. These providers operate under strict data processing agreements and are contractually prohibited from using your data for any purpose other than providing services to Away Message. We do not sell or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
Children and serious illness
Away Message is designed for users 18 and older in general use. However, we recognize that serious illness does not discriminate by age. If you are a parent, guardian, or care provider acting on behalf of a minor with a terminal or serious illness, please contact us at support@awaymessage.app. We are committed to finding a compassionate path forward and will work with you directly to ensure no one is excluded from leaving their words behind.
Data retention
Your account and messages are stored for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your messages and personal data are permanently deleted within 30 days. If Away Message ever ceases operations, we will provide at least 90 days notice and the opportunity to download your data before deletion.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Download a copy of your data
- Withdraw consent at any time

Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via email or an in-app notification. Your continued use of Away Message after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
